Start your hike through the lush rainforest zone after completing registration at the Marangu Gate. The trail gently ascends through dense canopy vegetation and opens to scenic farm views along the base of the mountain.
Arrive at Mandara Hut, nestled in the forest, where you’ll overnight in shared wooden huts with dining and washroom facilities.

Today’s route moves through the upper rainforest and transitions into open heath and moorland. On a clear day, enjoy stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The trail is lined with heather and unique flora like lobelias.
Spend the night at Horombo Hut, surrounded by panoramic mountain views.
Hiking time: 6–8 hours
Elevation gain: 1,020m
Vegetation zone: Moorland
This rest day is critical for acclimatization. After breakfast, take a hike to Mawenzi Ridge for epic views and photo opportunities. This short hike will help your body adjust to the high elevation and improve your summit success rate.
Return to Horombo Hut for the night.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Elevation: 3,720m (Horombo) – 4,000m (Ridge)
Ascend across the barren, rocky Saddle Desert, the stretch of land between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. It’s a slow and steady climb toward the base camp, where you’ll overnight at Kibo Hut, the launch point for your midnight summit.
Hydrate, eat well, and rest early tomorrow is summit day.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Elevation gain: 980m
Vegetation zone: Alpine desert
At midnight, begin your ascent to the summit by headlamp. Navigate steep switchbacks and loose scree in darkness to reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m) at sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Take in your achievement with summit photos before descending back to Horombo Hut, with a stop at Kibo for lunch.

Elevation: 4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720m
Challenge level: High – slow, steady, and mentally strong
After breakfast, descend past Mandara Hut and back through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your official summit certificate. Your driver will meet you and take you back to Moshi for a celebratory dinner and hot shower.
